in order of sequence/sound
This piece is a collection of paper tiles painted synesthetically in color with acrylic paint to music.
Each tile is of identical scale, placed in sequence and edited digitally into black and white, for a total of 5 unique white tiles. Each is its own yet is connected to the others in its fluid form placed on geometric background, its white positive space on black, unifying background. This piece is about process and the continual evolution of the object. The emotion could be a sense of serenity due to the calm nature that white paint can evoke, and the order that identically-sized, geometric objects in sequence can create. In one meditative mental practice, the practitioner is told to envision a white square. The idea is to stare at the square in one’s mind and imagine it expanding, becoming brighter, focusing on it until it invokes a clear mind. This, in turn, evokes a sense of calm in the thinker. This in conjunction with the intuitive painting process of listening to a dream-pop record – containing its own calming sounds – then painting to those sounds were the inspiration behind this project. The movement of the sound is seen in the rhythm of the paint streaks. The sound as a visual continues to evolve. This, as a prototype, is painting to digital.
