The Past/The Future/You/Me/The Stars
In Constellations, artificial lights are photographed and presented through circular ‘openings’. The lights represent stars, constellations – impressions of them, seen in the distance. The ‘openings’ look like windows which lead to one sky.
I was thinking about the past in relation to the present and the future, as well as what is constant through time. It is also in relation to the ‘real’ in the sense of feeling connected to oneself and to others vs. feeling disconnected from oneself and from others within a constructed reality that technology / digital media provides.
The stars are constant – they were here before, during, and after technology. The artificial lights represent technology. They, however, appear real, which invites the viewer to think about the past / present / and future as all being connected, as the stars have existed since the beginning of time and will likely continue to exist.
This piece is a commentary on the evolution of technology and its effects of causing us to distance ourselves from ourselves. It invites the viewer back into themselves via entering the ‘openings’, to explore the vastness of the sky, the limitless possibilities of imagination and of existence. It invites the viewer back into existence – into feeling connected with oneself and with others – by observing the beauty that exists outside of a technologically constructed reality.
